Piero della Francesca's Flagellation of Christ, around 1460. It has an extremely interesting underlyining geometry, as well as the story! Have a look at the figures at the front - they are representatives of the different classes of contemporary Italy; the figure of Mercury (god of communication) sheds light on the ceiling above the youth being punished.
